From Intern to Structural Engineer at ESS

Suraj Pandey, Structural Engineer

My journey at ESS began as a student intern, eager to grasp civil engineering. Through cost estimation and assisting with designs, I gained practical knowledge that solidified my passion. My dedication landed me a full-time position after my internship.

While working as full-time staff, I began my master’s in engineering. ESS, always supportive of its staff’s professional and academic growth, adjusted my tasks to ensure I could manage both my work and study commitments. The flexibility provided by ESS allowed me to attend college sessions without compromising my responsibilities at work. Thanks to this unique support, I completed my Master’s in Earthquake Engineering with distinction.

Over the years, I have grown both professionally and personally. Initially, I mastered managing tasks and deadlines. As my skills developed, I transitioned to coordinating across teams, tackling project challenges head-on. Effective communication became essential, cultivated through collaboration with colleagues. A project I am particularly proud of is the 150-bed Advanced International Hospital. By leveraging the strengths of my colleagues, we split tasks efficiently, ensuring on-time delivery. Regular and clear communication with clients kept them informed every step of the way.

This growth is evident in my work. From my beginnings, I have progressed to lead complex projects and work directly with clients. My passion for earthquake engineering extends beyond my work at ESS; I actively stay updated on the latest technologies and innovations. We also collaborate with local groups to improve earthquake safety by training engineers and masons, empowering communities to build resilient structures.

When faced with obstacles, I lead a team-oriented approach to problem-solving, always ensuring the best solutions are implemented.
