Seismic Vulnerability Assessment & Retrofit Design of Poly Villa Residence, Gulshan, Dhaka

  • Client: USAID Bangladesh
  • Project Year: 2015-2016
  • Site: Poly Villa Residence, Gulshan, Dhaka, Bangladesh

In 2015, ESS conducted a study on Poly Villa in Dhaka, Bangladesh, to assess its vulnerability to earthquakes and design retrofitting options. They examined the building through visual inspections, tests on-site, and detailed analyses. The building, a three-story residential structure with brick infill walls, posed complex structural challenges. Various tests were conducted, including on mortar properties and soil liquefaction potential. Based on the findings, the building was categorized as confined masonry. Detailed structural analysis, including Finite Element Modeling with software, was performed using seismic coefficient methods. The study aimed to enhance the building’s seismic resistance and reduce potential damage. Retrofitting options were proposed to upgrade the structure from a partial collapse risk to a safer level, ensuring better earthquake resilience.
